"Wadi a-Tuffah" (The Valley of Apples), 1984
This was El-Funoun’s first experience in presenting a story in dances and songs. The story started with bidding farewell to the land in search of happiness and well-being abroad, and ended in returning to the land and embracing it, thereby achieving the sought after happiness. The work included a harvest scene, a traditional wedding scene, a battle and other motifs that indirectly symbolized Palestinian life under occupation.
Despite its strong strings to reality, “Wadi a-Tuffah” was a pioneering artistic work that relatively avoided direct political discourse, which was dominant at the time. Most of the songs and dances were based on folkloric tunes and themes, while some of the songs were written for the production, and were only inspired by folklore.
The Troupe performed “Wadi a-Tuffah” at Birzeit Nights Festival and won the First Prize. This production was performed many times all over Palestine, accumulating the appreciation and fervent applause of Palestinian audiences.
